Earthling Ed's 'Unity Diner' is Quite the Experience

Written by Amy Louise Devese-Jenkins

The Future is Vegan

The centre of attention within a small grey courtyard in thriving Hoxton market, the vivid teal paint and neon signage alert me to the fact I’ve arrived at Earthling Ed’s growing vegan hot spot. Opening its doors for the first time in September 2018, the non-profit diner was welcomed by London’s vegan community, its ever-growing popularity evident throughout social media.

Filled with breathtakingly beautiful artwork and the use of locally sourced ingredients within its food. It’s clear to see how Unity has become a cult favourite so rapidly. Placed just across the street, established restaurant named ‘MEATmission’ stares right into the heart of the venue, with Unity’s own mission statement staring daringly back.

Emblazoned boldly on the windows, white print openly shares the fundamental basics

of what the establishment is about: “Unity Diner is a non-profit vegan establishment where your money goes directly towards helping save the lives of animals.”

Allowing the venue to stick with its grass roots, this support is highly beneficial for animal rights charity ‘Surge’ whom specialise in vegan campaigns and making others actively question how their choices impact others.

With meals priced from £9 up, the menu features breakfast items such as the ‘Chickken Pancake Stack’, the ‘Classic Full English’ and ‘Waffles’. While the daytime dishes focus on burgers, with one even being finished off with a charcoal bun. While all this sounds appealing and your imagination can run wild from the various pictures uploaded onto Instagram, Unity cleverly incorporated Veganuary into their menu throughout

the last month.

Added to the already amazing choice of dishes, was the ‘Surf and Turf Hot Dog’, the ‘Chickpea and Sweet Potato Curry’; the ‘Crab and Fennel Salad’ and the ‘Epic Mac and Cheeze’. Hitting you as soon as you enter the door, a mouth-watering aroma surrounds you like a warm blanket. Quick to attend to your needs, the servers give you friendly advice on what’s popular, sharing their knowledge and dedication to the job with ease. Craving a dish that screamed “fast food”, the Surf and Turf Hot Dog was chosen, accompanied by

Sweet Potato fries and a vegan mustard mayo. Filled to the brim with juicy tomatoes, peppery rocket and a smoked hot dog, the battered ‘shrimp’ which were golden in colour were placed on top.

A true palate of flavours, the smoked hot dog combined with the slight heat from the mustard mayo made a delicious combination. One many others seem to have agreed with. Since Veganuary has ended, the supposed limited edition dishes were due to stop being served, yet just last week Unity’s Instagram posted to confirm that the dish will be here to stay.“The response to our #veganuary menu has been amazing! We’re excited to say that we have decided to revamp our menu in order to feature your new favourites…Our top seller throughout January isn’t going anywhere just yet!”

Not only this but the founders are again working on yet more

delights for us to devour.
